Rich media is another one of those elusive advertising buzzwords that is creating the latest stir in web marketing. We are all used to standard forms of visual advertising media which are typically images in GIF or JPEG formats. Rich media is very different and when done well can be much more effective.
Rich media takes internet advertising to a whole new level by providing interactivity, sound and streaming capabilities. Additionally, more complex animation can be achieved which previously was prohibited by large file sizes using the GIF format.
Currently, the 2 most common forms of rich media are HTML banners and Flash presentations. HTML banners are simply a banner that is composed of HTML/DHTML/Javascript code instead of using an image such as a JPEG or GIF. This format offers the ability to offer forms and other interactive features not available using graphics formats. Below is an example of an HTML banner we designed for our sister site TechTutorials.com.
At first glance, this looks like a regular JPEG or GIF banner, but it is not. While the TechTutorials logo on the right is a JPEG image, the left side is an interactive form that allows the visitor to enter search terms into the form via the use of HTML tables. When the "Search" button is clicked, the visitor will be taken to TechTutorials.com, however, they will be taken to the page that corresponds with their search terms. If still confused, just try searching for "Windows 2000 Active Directory" and you will see that the page that you are taken to will contain the results of your search. This is just one example of what can be done with this type of media. We very easily could have utilized JavaScript to create a pull-down menu that would take visitors to various parts of the site when selected for example.
As Macromedia's Flash technology has gained steam over the last couple of years, it has not only had a profound impact on web site design, but marketing as well. Flash allows you to create complex (and interactive) animations that previously were not possible. Because of its streaming capabilities and relatively small file size, a knowledgeable Flash designer can create ads that are completely interactive, provide sound and can transcend the standard boundaries of previous advertising formats. A notable recent example was Microsoft's Windows XP ad campaign displayed on many large computer web sites such as CNET which featured a person floating across the screen and eventually flying into the banner ad itself which finally shrank to standard banner size (468x60) - all this happened to the background music of Madonna. Many major sites such as ESPN, CNN et al are utilizing this effective form of web advertising. The downfall of this type of advertising for many smaller companies is that it requires an experienced Flash programmer to create the ads. If your company does not have this type of resource internally, this service can be outsourced by many marketing/design companies.
The good news for you is that we are fully capable of hosting these types of media, although we are unable to provide statistics for them and they will have to be tracked by you. In most cases, we will charge the same amount as a standard JPEG or GIF banner. Please contact us with your specific needs and we will provide you with a quote.
