We have just learned from an article on CertCities.com that the Electronics Technician Association offers a "rollover" program for some CompTIA certifications as follows:

If you are A+ certified, you can earn ETA's Computer Service Technician (CST) certification by paying a $49 fee.

If you are Network+ certified, you can earn ETA's Certified Network Systems Certification (CNST) certification by paying a $69 fee.

While these certifications are not heavily recognized in the industry, this is an easy way to add a couple of extra relevant certifications to your resume.

For more information, click here.

are these worth having then? do you need to take a test or do you just pay the fee and they're yours?

As stated in my post and in the linked article. You just pay the fee.

They might be worth it if you have an extra $100 to pay for them and they are relevant to your career path or existing experience..

You will need to send a photocopy of your A+ or Network+ cert.

Very Happy It's much easier to use the COMPTIA Publish Cert Status feature. This will email them to verify your status.

if you rollover your A+ to their CST, it has to be updated every year then for an additional 25$ fee? You have to prove to them that you keep current with your cert. I don't get it.

The best explanation I could find that explained why recert is important was from the ICCP site. It says:

Because the environment in which the certified professional functions is so dynamic, it is vital that ICCP certificate holders remain current in the field.

. . . The ICCP holder must renew their certificate through ongoing professional development before the end of the third year, and again during each succeeding three year period.

. . .

The ICCP Recertification Program has three major goals:

Maintain professional competence;
Update existing knowledge and skills;
Attain additional knowledge and skills.

Certification renewal may be accomplished through various kinds of professional development:

By expanding your certification Specialties with new examinations;
Through re-examination in your existing area of expertise;
By participating in educational and other professional activities.

120 contact hours of appropriate activities during the three year period will renew your certification. Full or partial renewal credit can be earned by adding additional Specialties to an ICCP certificate. . .

I am a CISSP and I have to do 120 continuing education credits over a 3 year program. This includes points for conferences, university courses, pertinent articles written for publication, etc.

I have no problems staying current. The things I do professionally fit really well. I just have to document them.

thats just plain stupid. if you use your A+ to prove you pass their exam, then only need to renew their cert? it just seems like a money grab to me...

I originally wrote that it might be a waste of time to "rollover" these certs if you are CompTIA certified. I then, for S&G, took a look at their website and saw that it might not be a bad idea for those looking to join a nice electrical local (union job). That cert might actually open doors for those new people looking to get into a high-paying field while staying in a stable environment that unions seem to provide. Do your own homework and see what you come up with.

I am sorry for logging in as Tcat_Houser. I have for now given up on resetting my password here for Tcat.

There are so many misconcpetions and nobody is asking the source.

So. To begin in random order:

SnipURL. It is a Tool. Like any tool, say a hammer, it can be used to build a shelter or destroy an priceless work of art in Italy. (do you history homework).

*ALL* my work since 2004 is NOW 100% Snipurl.
This is because I don't have to pay thousands of $ to do a book change and people who already paid me for a reference book are left in the cold on a topic. Because some mis-use the hammer does not make a wise decision to outlaw hammers.

Flat statement of "Spammers use Snipurl" shows the author is no where ready for anything in the Security field. Hint. Spammers use whatever tool they can find. So do the good guys.

Electronics and The ETA-I.

Someone Completely MIS-Read CET vs. CST.

The CET requires a pretty serious electronics background. The CST is an A+ equal. The E = Electronics. The S= Service.

My purpose for pushing the ETA-I.org is after being with CompTIA since ABCD (A Better Computer Dealer) I have come to the realization I cannot make them give a damn about the geek outside of the US/Canada/UK.

That is why I have http://snipurl.com/saveafrog

Note I am not Faulting CompTIA. As I say in the above link, T - Trade.
It is not CompGIA for G = Geek.

We need and have had since 1978 a Geek org. You can all stand around and say I never heard of ETA-I.org. That is your choice.

The game is structured that you get letters from a GEEK group AND you get a gaggle of study material from ME and my friends on MS and CompTIA.

It was setup as a no-brainer here is a bunch of study material for less than $50. and you get into a group that can bless you in areas CompTIA cannot. Show me the Bio-Medicial-Electronic cert from CompTIA.

You don't care? You might when your X-ray is "lost". That happened to me after a mountain bike accident. They missed the fact that I broke ribs which went through my lungs and sent me home with my lungs filling with blood.

Thanks only to a good employee and friend (Matt Simmons -- thanks Matt) did I get back into the hosptial for emerency surgary that I am alive today.

So to I feel a strong passion to make the ETA-I.org visible? After almost dying due to a small technical failure, yeah you might say I have a cause.

I really don't give a flying fig if anyone here becomes a X-Ray/Network tech. I do care to make the ETA-I.org more on the radar of Planet IT.

Because we need a geek org and we need better Bio-Techs. I lived only through a quirk of fate and the sincere caring of another person. The next one may be your brother or sister... They may not be so lucky.

Finally. The re-cert issue.

Yes. By ISO standards you have to demo. that you have done 10 hours a year to improve yourself. That is as simple as showing articles written, gone to a trade show.... CompTIA does not follow ISO standards.

IF you are looking for a free ride, go CompTIA. U are blessed for life.
Now don't come screaming to me that Oracle requires you have a CURRENT A+ test to maintain your IBM PSE. IBM sees the sham and requires CURRENT blessing.

ETA-I solves that for IBM.

Finally. Those not in US/Canada/UK cannot afford CompTIA (see my snipul).

I am changing that. If you are thinking who cares about someone in Mexico or Korea --- please email me directly so I can put you on my narrow-minded list. I'll be sure to enter you into my black hole list so when changes happen and they impact you personally I won't hear you narrow minded views.

Hopefully I can win the argument with the server and be back as Tcat

And I hope this ends a ton of mis-information.

Seems fishy to me.

Pay somebody money to recognize your cert?

If I put that on my resume, then nobody is gonna know what it is anyway.

Don't see the point except to give these people some of my hard earned money.

If they actually had you do a test to prove you still know the material, then I would agree that it would be relevant to prove to others your knowledge is still current. But as it stands now its sounds to me like they just want money. Your presence at a trade show doesn't necessarily prove you learned anything.

I did some further research on this myself. I agree that handing someone my hard earned money just to prove my certification is not worth it.

I went on a job interview on Thursday and the interviewer gave me an exam to test my knowledge. It had the same questions that I had on my A+ 2003 exam that I took in February of this year (2006), and I aced the test and the interview. I just awaiting for a response from the hiring manager.

So I will not be wasting my money. I'd rather save it for when I have to pay for my Network+ exam.

Have a nice day!
Very Happy
