Hi Guys,
I tried the 290 exam and failed by one question Now I am going back and reviewing all questions I was unsure about. 1 topic i am having trouble finding infor on is setting up a default profile across the network. I know to do this on PC you copy the modified profile to the default user profile then all new users receive this profile.
Is there somewhere I can setup a default user profile so any new user on the network will receive this profile? _________________ BComp, CCA, CCNA, MCSE 2003

If you mean you want all new users (or users without existing profiles) to use a default profile you need to:
* Create your Default Profile
* Copy to \\DomainController\SYSVOL\DomainName\Scripts\Default User
Any user without an existing roaming profile will now use this profile. When they logoff it will be saved in the location you specified on the Account tab with dsa.msc.
Obviously this won't work for users that already have a profile.

There was a question in the exam similar to this bit it was confusing. It did not have that path as an option but something similiar - something like \netlogon\default user... etc i dont know
Just really confused. _________________ BComp, CCA, CCNA, MCSE 2003

No, thats correct. But thats for point users to their user profiles.
I am talking about new users who do not yet have a user profile set up and would generally pick their initial profile from the computer they log into the domain from,
I.e. C:\Documents and Settings\Default user.
I wanted to know if this can be changed to a central location on the network. i didnt think it could but there is a question in the exam related to this. _________________ BComp, CCA, CCNA, MCSE 2003

Well I don't see why you can't copy a profile to the network, and set it for use by Everyone, but Windows XP itself will always create new users from a combination of the All Users and Default Users folders on the local computer no? _________________ David Jones BSc (Hons)

The \\DomainController\SYSVOL\DomainName\Scripts folder is shared as NETLOGON so
\\DomainController\SYSVOL\DomainName\Scripts\Default User
=
\\DomainController\NETLOGON
The reason you copy to the SYSVOL\.... directories is that the NETLOGON share is READ ONLY so you can't copy your Default User profile into there.
Windows XP will then use the \\DomainController\NETLOGON\Default User profile when a new user first logs on, when the user then logs off the profile (whether it has been changed or not) will be saved in the location you specified, usually \\FileServer\Profiles$
I think this is one of those things that becomes clear in practice but hard to follow when you're just reading about it, anyway, hope this helps
