Are these pay rates for onsite tech ridiculous?

To drive 50km (c. 30 miles) each way would cost about €10.

lets assume petrol in the US is cheaper ... so do a 1:1 conversion from euro to $

30 mile round trip (regardless of how long you stay on-site)
Earn = $18.00
Costs = $10.00
Tax (c. 30% on the $18) = $5.40
Cup of Coffee = $2.60

Net Return = 0

No point getting in the car!!!

As a contractor, I am reimbursed $.55 per mile. For the first one, that's about normal. After that, you aren't even getting the equivalent of the tax break.

If your car gets 20 miles per gallon (it should be better as a contractor...mine gets roughly 27), then each gallon of gas would net you 11 dollars. Given that gas is 3 bucks a gallon, and given the wear and tear, you should expect $.55 per mile. 100 miles at $.55 is 55 bucks, which is higher than 48.

You should also be able to bill for your time driving as well.
