Is there alot of overlap on these exams? I've just passed my final exam today for an MCSA (70-299) and have begun to study for the 70-293. It seems that many of the topics that are covered are the same, maybe a mix of stuff from the 70-290 thrown in as well?

I passed my 291 a while ago and have been studying for the 293 for the past month or so. At first I was having a real hard time trying to figure out what this test was wanting me to know. It seemed like such a big overlap with the 291 that it almost seemed like I was studying for the same exam!
The big difference that I have found so far in my studying has been in server clustering and Network Load Balancing. I don't remember seeing anything about these items on 291 and the study guides I have been using for 293 seem to be hitting these two subjects relatively hard (or at least it seems like that to me....but maybe that's because clustering is new to me). The other big subjects seem to be DNS and Security (and, to a lesser extent DHCP) but these are mostly review from 291.
Keep in mind I haven't taken the exam yet. This is just my impression from study materials.

My impressions as well..I feel like I have a good grasp of the material except for the cluster and NLB, so much so that I rescheduled my exam for tomorrow afternoon. I was hitting around 70% on the MeasureUp practices without even cracking the books, mostly due to experience and recent studying for the other exams. Plan on cramming NLB and clustering for the next 2 days and seeing if I can squeak out a pass. Will post with an update on impressions after the test

Please do! (post your impressions of the test). Every test I have taken to this point (A+, Net+, Security+, and all the MCSA tests) I have been able to find things about people's test experiences online. I am amazed at the lack of 293 info I have come across online. Would love to hear something from a recent test taker.

Well not to recent anymore but I've done it right after 291. That's a big plus because the overlap is enormous...
The big difference between 291 and 293 is that 291 expects you to configure (technical) and 293 expects you to plan (theoretical.) since 293 is for the MCSE track it is asking for a different way of thinking.. But in my opinion.. the basis made in 291 is for 70 % enough to cover 293.
Keep it on clustering/NLB, security, WSUS and just do a quick review of the rest.. Offcourse study your weekpoints from 291.
Best of luck!
And before it is asked again.. IT's WSUS _________________ MCSA/MCSE 2003 + Messaging, MCITP 2008 SA/EA/2007 EMA, LPIC 1, CCNA, ITIL Foundations

Just got back from the 293. Passed with an 820. Wasn't as good of a score as I was hoping for but, a pass is a pass. The test was more difficult than I was expecting, and I was pleased that I passed. I dont mind saying that I just flat out guessed on at least 5 questions. There were around 4 simulations. I had hoped that I would get a good sampling of WSUS (one of my strong points) to make up for some areas I didn't have practical experience in, but curiously it was absent here.
The test was just a broad overview of pretty much everything I had tested on recently (290,291,299), with clustering and load balancing thrown in. I think there were about 6 total questions on NLB/Clustering. Very light on DNS (another of my stronger points). All in all I'm extremly pleased I passed, but I don't feel like I prepared well enough for it, a few guesses that might have went the wrong way might have sunk me.
In terms of difficulty, I'd rate this right up with the 291. Well, on to the 294 AD .

Congrats on your pass and thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts. I passed the 291 on the first try but I remember thinking it was HARD so I guess I'll really take some time to prepare for the 293.

I was just about to post a similar question when I came across this post. I started reading my MS Press book last week and started on my testout cbt last night. Everything seems just like 291 so far. I even double checked to make sure I grabbed the right testout cd. _________________ Comptia:A+; Network+
