Question
Good morning. I've finally decided to get "on track" and get certified. I have a question that hopefully a few of you could provide your opinion as well as a concern.

I've recently retired from the Navy in the IT field (21 yrs) - the military, believe it or not, are behind the times when it comes to technology (well some)...especially on Ships - anyhow - we were still using NT. I now work as a contractor supporting the Navy and where I'm currently working - is also NT. We have a few 2000 workstations and quite a few XP Pros.

Which path would you recommend I choose - 2000 or 2003?

Either route, I will have to set up labs at work and at home - probably with virtual machines - in order to be able to mess around with the different servers, active directory....etc. I feel I have the necessary background and/or knowledge - just lack the experience with the different OS's - but need to get certified so I can move on to bigger and better things.

Recommendations/thoughts?

tks

I would reccomend that you go for your mcse2003 but you incorporate windows 2000 servers in your virtual home lab.
You also could just do the 2000 track and do the 2003 upgrade at a later date.

I would say you are probably better prepared for the 2000 track at this point, just from your work experience. I would go 2000 and then upgrade to 2003 IMHO.

The upgrade exams to go from 2000 to 2003 are b*st*rds.

I think there is still plenty of time to certify on 2000. For a while there was some speculation on how long the 2003 upgrade exams would be made available, but at this point it doesn't look like they are being retired yet. I'm going to try to knock both the upgrade exams out in June. We'll see how that goes. 70-292 Saturday morning. I've got DNS coming out of all bodily orifices at this point!

First off, thank you for your unselfish service to our great country... it is people like you who make me proud. I just recently separated from the USAF and am back in my hometown continuing school at CBU (Christian Brothers University) here in Memphis.

I have a local headhunter who says the 2003 track is hotter right now than the 2k track simply because it is directly more related to the Vista structure OS which will be the new platform available to the public in 2007.

Good luck to you and again thank you for your service.

Phil

Thanks Phil. My hats off to you as well for serving our country.

Thanks, also, for the advice on the 2003 track. Probably will go that route. Taking the 70-270 tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully that will be a good experience (say PASS) and get on track.

thanks
