resolving between MAC and IP is ARP/RARP
DNS/rDNS allow for the resolving between Computer Name and IP address
DHCP allows for the assignment of an IP address via temporary lease to a designated MAC address
The wording of the question is poor - resolve the IP address from what? Resolve the MAC address from what?
If you are given a computer name, you use DNS to resolve the IP address, and then uses ARP to convert the IP address into a MAC address
To go from the MAC address, you would use RARP to get the IP address, and then perform a reverse DNS lookup to get the computer name. _________________

This is a question that I was asked on the ICND 1 exam, and I was stumped. I thought it was RARP but wasn't sure, but went back to my notes and the only clue that I came up was "DNS resolves". _________________ FJohnson

DNS is used to resolve names to IP addresses and vice versa. RARP has been rendered obsolete by DHCP, also RARP is not used to resolve IP addresses of hosts, it was only used for the host to look up its own IP address. Thus, the only answer would be ARP.
