There are two building, the first building has 2 2900 switches and the other building (a 20 second walk away) has 3 2900 switches, the buildings are connected via fiber. I wanted to figure out what the the root switch. So i went through the first two switches at the first location and found the RootId they were pointing to, so I figured it was a switch at the 2nd location. So I telneted to those switches and none of them were the root switch. Well I took the MAC address from the rootID and found it to be the proxy server appliance.

It's a Esoft hardware bundled with software used as a IPS/IDS. It has 2 Nic's for for LAN and one for WAN.

Is it normal for something other than a cisco switch to become the root switch?

Another device can become the root as long as it is running the spanning tree protocol. It sounds like that IPS/IDS appliance is using spanning tree rather than a bonding protocol (such as LACP) to prevent loops.
