Tech Jobs Leave U.S. for India, Russia
An article by the Associated Press reports that tech jobs, particularly in the programming field are heading overseas. The article states that unlike the minimum wage jobs that have moved overseas in other industries, these are high paying, upper-level jobs.

The reasons for U.S. companies to take this approach are obvious. In India, the average programmer costs $20 per hour in wages and benefits, compared to $65 per hour for an American with a comparable qualifications. Furthermore, these developing countries have a rapidly growing tech force that averages 3 years on the job instead of 1.5 in the U.S.

While good for U.S. companies' bottom lines, many argue that this practice will prolong the slumping economy at home and cause the U.S. to lose its domination in the technology world.

Book Review: Mastering Windows Server 2003
Not having a lot of expectations from windows server 2003 made me unenthusiastic to read about it. This wasnt going to be fun.

That said, I read Mark Minasi's Mastering Windows Server 2003 in 3 weeks! Not bad for a French guy like me. After all, this is a 1752 page long book!

At this point, I am a win2k Mcsa and I can say without shame that this book has taught me a lot. In fact, it was better than any certification book Ive read so far. Even more than the $5000 course I paid for last year. The reason is that this book talks about any flavor of Windows NT there is! While it focuses on Windows Server 2003, there are always references to Microsofts previous versions. It also talks about general server related tasks like building logon scripts with Kix32 (a non Microsoft technology).

This book really covers everything related to a windows server platform and Mark Minasi really knows how to explain things in a clear and simple way. This book covers every service included in Windows Server 2003: DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, RRAS, etc. It is an excellent book to learn from scratch all of the basic windows technologies. Even TCP/IP and subnetting is in there!

For those that want to upgrade their certifications, you will be happy to see that each chapter follows a certain pattern that will enable you to skip basic knowledge and directly plunge into robust explanations. The book also includes a full chapter that talks about new stuff in windows server 2003. From there, you can jump right to the sections you want to read about and consider the book as a reference manual.

The book also comes with a cd-rom containing a fully searchable pdf version. This can prove an invaluable tool for on the road troubleshooting.

This book is a really great tool. Reading it was a snap and didnt feel like a technical book to read. I believe someone with no client/server platform knowledge can read this and get a very good understanding of how things work. I also believe that this book contains all of the information needed to pass most MCSE exams. However, it is not intended for that matter so I would recommend buying complementary self-testing software to get to know the exam objectives.
