Article: Introduction to the Windows 2003 MCSA Certification Track
In our last article, we discussed the upcoming Windows 2003 MCSE certification track. In this article, we will examine the new MCSA certification requirements.

The MCSA will still require a total of 4 exams and will consist of 2 core networking system exams as follows:
    • Exam 70290: Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment
    • Exam 70-291: Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure
The client component consists of a choice between the existing client exams Windows XP Professional (70-270) or Windows 2000 Professional (70-210). If you have already passed one of these exams, then you do not need to worry about the client component.

Finally, there is 1 elective exam as previously mentioned. CompTIA exams can be used in place of your elective as follows:

    A+ and Network+
    or
    A+ and Server+

A list of available elective exams is located on Microsoft's web site.

    Upgrading:
In order to upgrade an MCSA from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003, a candidate must only pass 1 upgrade exam as follows:
    • Exam 70-292: Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment for an MCSA Certified on Windows 2000
Once you have achieved your MCSA, you may wish to move on toward an MCSE. In order to do this, you need to take 3 additional exams as follows:

    Networking System:
    • Exam 70-293: Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure
    • Exam 70-294: Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure
    Design:
    • Exam 70-297: Designing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory and Network Infrastructure
      or
    • Exam 70-298: Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network
If you have any questions about any of this, we can try to help you out in our forums.

    Women, Minorities in I.T. Declines
According to a recent study done by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), the number of women and minority workers in the U.S. tech workforce has declined between 1996 and 2002.

ITAA President Harris N. Miller attributes the disparities to the fact that women and minorities "earn significantly fewer undergraduate degrees in computer science and engineering than their representation in the U.S. population".

    • Exam 70-290: Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment
    • 70-291: Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure
The exam numbers will be 71-290 and 71-291, respectively and will be available June 4-15.

Microsoft beta exams are free and available by invitation only.

Book Review: Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide
When I first received the package in the mail, I thought, Wow this box is heavy. How on earth will I get this done in a timely manner? As a student of the Cisco Academy, I am used to reading and understanding the way Cisco Press writes their books. The Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide's 1017 pages are enough to make your head spin, but dont worry, this book was written to teach those who have previous knowledge in the field as well as those who are still green.

The book starts with a brief history on what the Cisco Certified Network Associate entails and how it relates to your continued success in the IT field.

The text covers and notes at the start of the chapter the topics related to the CCNA exam. What I really liked about this book was that it was very thorough covering everything from the CLI to IPX, and from Frame Relay to ISDN. The extra questions in the appendix really help you to test your knowledge about subnetting and the Cisco IOS commands. Two subjects that I recommend you understand for the exam and as a functional network administrator. The diagrams and charts help drive home the information stated in the reading.

This book is best used for the following:
    1. For those who have taken ICND or are apart of a CCNA Academy program. It has Do I know this Already? 12 question quizzes before each chapter to test your knowledge on each subject with the answers in the appendix. Then I recommend that you read the foundation section of the chapter.
    2. The second way to use this book is for those are new to the terminology and devices covered on the #640-607 exam.

Either way, with this book and a lot of study time you can achieve your goals. Reading this book alone, will not guarantee the passing of this exam, however, with the use of the labs and study questions provided on a bonus CD-ROM it will give you a strong foundation to pass the CCNA exam.

I highly recommend this book to those who are serious about becoming a CCNA. Do not be taken aback by the size of this book, it is worth the time and money.
