| CheetSheets Owner Gets Jail |
|
Robert Keppel, the owner of the now defunct CheetSheets web site, was sentenced today under the Economic Espionage Act for selling Microsoft exam questions. He received a 1 year and 1 day jail sentence and ordered to pay $500,000 restitution in addition to the nearly $200,000 in assets that had already been seized.
It is estimated that Keppel made $750,000 via his criminal activities. Taking into account how much of that he likely spent during the years he was in business, the $500,000 restitution should really hurt.
The maximum penalty for this type of crime is 10 years. Keppel plead guilty which significantly reduced his potential sentence. His jail time will be followed by 3 years of probation.
This is a very big win for the certification industry as it is the first time a person has been prosecuted criminally for braindumping or selling real questions. It sets a precedent that will make it much easier for future prosecutions.
For more details, check out the article at CertCities.
According to an article on CertCities.com, CompTIA plans to update 1 or both of the A+ exams. It appears that the updates will be minor and will likely go into effect in Q3 or Q4 of this year.

MCSE Windows XP Professional Study Guide (70-270) - Reviewed by Jason Sprague
This is the first Osborne certification book that I have ever read or even looked through. Having reviewed Curt Simmons MCSE Windows XP Professional Study Guide, I am not sure why I never considered purchasing any of these books in the past.
The book starts off with over 40 pages that provide a good orientation to this particular exam, as well as Microsoft certifications in general. If you are not new to all of this, you may consider this section optional.
The book is well written and contains walkthroughs and screenshots for a majority of the tasks that one would perform with XP. Even better, it also contains tons of exercises throughout the chapters that will really help one grasp the concepts in a more concrete manner. I also like the side notes that presented additional information about topics a person should know for the exams (Exam Watch) and for the real world (On the Job).
At the end of the chapters there are self-test questions and a lab question. The self-test questions are simplistic and nothing like the questions that you will face on the real exam, however, they are good for review purposes.
The accompanying CD-ROM has some nice features and a good amount of content including practice test software, labs, videos and an e-book.
The MasterExam practice test software by LearnKey offers a 57 question practice test with quality randomized questions that are similar to the types that will be on the real exam. The software states that the questions displayed are from a pool of questions, however, I was unable to determine how large the pool was. The MasterSim Labs by LearnKey offer 30 interactive simulations that provide hands-on experience performing common tasks in Windows XP. The CertCam feature offers 55 narrated video clips that demonstrate how to perform various tasks in Windows XP. This CD-ROM offered more content than has been provided on most of the other certification books that I have reviewed.
Realistically, it is very difficult to write a certification text that caters to people of all different skill levels. This book is probably best suited for candidates in the beginning to intermediate knowledge level range. It is particularly good for those who have very little or no hands-on experience with the product as it provides quite a few resources to help out with this. If that describes you, then I would definitely recommend this book. I would also say that this book is much better than the 3 star rating that it currently has on Amazon.com.
