  • What's New @ MC MCSE:
First off, we would like to apologize for the technical problems on our site as of late. We were recently hacked and lost a lot of data. Normally, this isnt the end of the world as long as your web host is doing regular backups. Ours was not.

3 new labs have been added to our lab section. These new ones are very cool and are described below:

SEC-001 - Gain illegal access to Microsoft IIS with a Unicode exploit. Steal an SQL database. Employ the appropriate countermeasures.
SEC-002 - Subvert a user's laptop using the SubSeven Trojan. Use the exploited system while logged into the LAN as a jump station to publish illegal files to an open FTP Server. Examine log files for illegal network activity.
SEC-005 - Gain illegal access to Microsoft IIS using Rain Forest Puppy's RDS exploit. Steal the password file and use a password cracking tool to decrypt it. Examine log files for illegal network activity.

We have added a new tutorial that discusses the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard included with Windows XP

Our next newsletter will be sent out in HTML format for those of you who have email clients that are configured to support this format. The rest of you will continue to receive our newsletter in this format.

    Microsoft To Raise Exam Fees:
Microsoft announced today that they will increase certification exam prices from $100 to $125 effective January 4, 2002.

    Exam Simulators Review:
We just finished reviewing Exam Simulators practice exam software for the Windows 2000 track. They currently have titles available for 8 of the Microsoft exams. This companys products are very exciting and we suggest that you read our full review.

    Cisco Press Product Review:
We also just reviewed Cisco Interactive Mentor: Cisco Internetworking Basics by Cisco Press. An excellent CBT style of training product for the CCNA exam.

    Check out the full review.

    Network+ Update:
CompTIA has announced that the updated Network+ exam will be released on January 31, 2002. If you wish to take the Network+ exam on the current exam objectives, you will need to do so before March 14th, 2002. This is when the current version will retire.

    Security Council:
It has been reported that Microsoft, Novell, Prosoft, Vue, Prometric and others have formed a Security Council created by CompTIA designed to protect the integrity of certification programs and deal with braindump sites and other businesses that are engaged in activities that violate non-disclosure agreements. The council was created in partnership with the Association of Test Publishers.

    CompTIA Cleaning House:
CompTIA is on a tear as of late bringing legal action against Troy Technologies who has removed all of their CompTIA "study guides", and has transitioned their remaining products under a different company name. CompTIA also recently brought legal action against Cheet Sheets, who appears to have disappeared completely. MC MCSE commends CompTIA on their efforts to remove unethical businesses and hope others (Microsoft) will follow their lead.

    Survey Results:
Our most recent survey question asked, How would you rate your knowledge of security practices and procedures?. The results were as follows:

    32% - Poor
    36% - Fair
    22% - Good
    10% - Excellent
    (of 465 respondents)

If you would like to improve your security knowledge and skills, taking the 3 new labs mentioned earlier would be a great place to start.
