WHATS NEW:
Our newsletter was recently featured in Cramsession's "Must Know News" newsletter.

Added 10 new questions to our Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure(70-216) practice exam at http://www.mcmcse.com/win2k/practice/702161.shtml.

We've written a new tutorial on Macintosh LPR Printing that is available on our TechTutorials website at http://www.techtutorials.com/tutorials/maclpr.shtml. This is a good one to read if you work in an environment that is trying to cut down on Appletalk traffic.

IT IS NOT EASY:
This article is for those of you making or considering a career change into the I.T. industry, while those that already work in the computer biz will certainly identify with the message. Many people make the change because the money is typically better, however, one important point is often forgotten - We work very hard for our money. This is one very stressful business. This article will present a tour of some of the things you should expect if you decide to take the plunge(or maybe you have and its too late).

Business is being conducted more and more with the use of computers which means that their importance is increasing all of the time and they are increasing becoming directly linked with a companies bottom line. Think about how integral a role email plays in business today, for example. What happens when it doesn't work? People freak out and the onus may fall on you to fix it.

We work long irregular hours and are often on call. In many positions, you will be like a doctor that may have to drop everything and head to work in the middle of the night to nurse a crashed server back to health. You may never get to go home in the first place. While 5pm may mean that it is time for dinner, it won't always mean that you get to eat it at home. In many positions, you won't leave unless everything is working correctly. When you do get to go home, you may have to take unfinished work with you.

People get the angriest about the things that they don't understand. The people you support, whether internal or external customers, will typically know less about computers(or whatever your field of expertise is). When things break, it affects their work and will often negatively impact their day. You will often get the brunt of their frustration. Learn how to diffuse angry people.

Egos run rampant in this business. It can be a competitive environment where those "in the know" have little patience for those that don't. Sometimes heads will swell, tempers will flare and battles will erupt.

Like politics? IT professionals should be required to have a minor in Political Science. Whenever possible, try not to get involved in any of this. Nobody wins.

So after all of this, why do we do it? When you fix things, you are the hero. Irregular hours usually equate to a flexible schedule. Frustrated users will view you as a savior. While some are egotistical, there is much comradery and teamwork. With experience, the money can be very good. Most importantly, we just love computers!

COMPTIA NEWS:
CompTIA, the creators of the popular A+, Network+ and I-net+ vendor neutral certification programs is announcing that Server+ will be available sometime during the 1st quarter of 2001. The new certification is being supported by a rich cast of leading IT companies. For more information, please visit: http://www.comptia.org/certification/serverplus/index.htm.

CompTIA has released further information regarding the A+ exam revisions. The A+ Core Service Technician exam will change to the A+ Core Hardware Exam and the A+ DOS/Windows Service Technician exam will change to A+ Operating System (OS) Technologies Exam. The exam code for the A+ Core Hardware exam will be 220-201 and the exam code for the A+ OS Technologies exam will be 220-202. These exams are to begin beta testing on November 22nd. Go to http://www.comptia.org/certification/aplus/aplus_revision.htm for more information.

BOOK REVIEW:
We most recently read the Windows 2000 Directory Services Infrastructure Training Guide, by New Riders. We have given the New Riders line of certification guides good ratings in the past due to their thoroughness, organization, and focus on subject matter. These solid attributes are evidenced again in their Windows 2000 Directory Services Infrastructure guide. This book should prove to be an excellent tool for anyone attempting to pass exam 70-217, provided they have experience with the Active Directory.

With their MCSE guides, New Riders has done a great job targeting their guides at passing the tests - not training on product. This might not be the book for you if you are studying for the exam while you learn the product. If you don't need a Dummies book, you've come to the right place.

This book provides excellent info, case studies, self reviews, and our favorite New Riders feature the "step by step" sections. These quick guides give detailed instruction on exactly how to perform certain tasks. The volume also includes a 65 question practice exam and a section called "fast facts" which is great cram session material.

In addition to the solid paper portion of the guide, the accompanying CD is a valuable resource. Included is the entire text in Adobe Acrobat format, so you can load it on your laptop for easy travel. An Exam Gear practice test is included on the disc.

Another solid effort from a good publisher that has us wondering, why are so many guides only moderately useful? The only real flaw we can find is that this book is not for everyone, which isn't really a flaw. If you don't need the training, why buy the extra pages?
