WELCOME:
Welcome to our 2nd edition! If you have any comments or questions, please let us know.

WHAT'S NEW:
For those of you who haven't stopped by in a while, we added a practice exam for the Networking Essentials exam. It can be found in the "Study" section of the site. The NT Server guide is completely finished.

MICROSOFT'S HIDDEN RESOURCES:
Believe it or not, Microsoft provides a huge amount of information on their website that is helpful for those of us trying to attain the MCSE. Unfortunately, their site is as large as their company making it very difficult to find what you are looking for. This month, I bit my cheek and dug into their site and have several resources that will help you pass. I'm assuming that everyone has been to their MCP site so I am not going to discuss this.

TECHNET:
http://technet.microsoft.com/cdonline/default.asp This is a subscription that Microsoft tries to sell, however, you can view all of the articles online for free. All you have to do is register. Once you are in, I would recommend using the search feature to find what you are looking for as much of the information isn't directly linked from the front page.

WHITEPAPERS:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/ Microsoft's FTP site has a section that contains a variety of whitepapers for download. They include: DHCP, RAS, RAID, DNS, WINS, TCP/IP, IIS, Exchange, SQL and many others. The filenames are rather cryptic so you may have to just download them and see what they are.

SEMINARS ONLINE:
http://www.microsoft.com/seminar/1033/Index/MasterIndex.htm Online Seminars on a huge variety of topics. The above link will take you to master index. I checked out one on DHTML and it was pretty informative. There is a BackOffice section and a Microsoft Certifications section that contain the subjects you are looking for.

NT SERVER RESOURCE KIT:
http://www.spiritone.com/~jsprague/mcse/books/books.html This is not a free one. The NT Resource kit is a book package for the 4 core exams published by Microsoft Press that includes a very handy CD-ROM that includes a mess of helpful NT utilities and the books in searchable format. In order to get your hands on this CD you have to order the books or find someone else that has it. The link above is for our bookstore. Once there, click the "core exams" link and you will see the MS Press books set that I am referring to.

MSDN TRAINING
http://msdn.microsoft.com/training/ Some decent info for some of the exams. I saw study info for IIS, Exchange and couple of others.

MCP SECURE WEBSITE
http://www.microsoft.com/mcp For MCPs only. Follow the link above and then click the "For MCPs Only" link at the top and login. I haven't had a whole lot of luck finding anything worthwhile in here, but I thought I would throw it in here anyway.

MICROSOFT SKILLS 2000
http://partnering3.microsoft.com/skills2000/default.asp Where do you fit into the IT industry? This exam will assess your skills and show you what types of jobs will fit your personality and work habits.

MOST POPULAR EXAMS:
According to the survey performed by MCP Magazine, exam popularity was ranked in the following order:
1) NT Server 2) NT Workstation 3) Networking Essentials 4) NT in the Enterprise 5) TCP/IP 6) IIS 7) Exchange 5.5 8) Windows 95 9) Proxy 10) Visual Basic 6.0

Take a look at number 8 and tell me what the problem with this is. OK, I'll tell you. As I am sure you all know, Microsoft retires exams that are outdated. Once that exam retires you have 6 months to pass the new exam in order to retain your title. In late April, Microsoft retired exam 70-063(Windows 95) and replaced it with 70-064, an updated Win95 exam. My gut feelings tell me that even though MS updated this exam, it will still retire before the Windows 98 exam since this OS was released much later. I would strongly recommend taking the Win 98 exam instead in hopes of extending the amount of time before you have to upgrade your certification. Win 95 and Win 98 are similar enough that it shouldn't be that difficult a task and having the Win98 cert under your belt will make your certifications look more current to employers. It will probably be at least another year before the Windows 2000 exams are ready, and at least another year after that until they are used widely enough for Microsoft to retire the Windows 98 exam.

LINKS OF NOTE:
You have probably already discovered that most MCSE sites(including ours) provide a "standard" set of links to the favorite MCSE sites out there. In this section we will attempt to dig up other resources that you may not have seen before. Most of these links will not be to other MCSE sites, but these links will include information that will aid you in your journey to the MCSE or just plain general knowledge to make you a better IT professional. We do the searching for you. This month I am also including the links from the last newsletter(most of these links are new), as we have had a lot of new people sign up since then.

GENERAL
Windows Galore
http://www.windowsgalore.com/
The link to their certification page is broken. The correct link is http://www.windowsgalore.com/cert/index.htm. But don't waste your time with that. The reason I included this link is for all of the other information that is not on their certification page.

Del Mar College
http://204.56.132.222
In their "Current Campus Link Topics" they have a list of their CIS courses. If you click on one of these there are some very good study guides.

Winplanet
http://www.winplanet.com/winplanet/tutorials/565/1/
A complete guide to networking Windows.

Whatis.com
http://www.whatis.com
Whatis.com is essentially and online computer reference dictionary. Has some very handy information.

WINDOWS 98 J. Helmig's FAQ has a lot of Windows 98 info. It is located at:
http://www.helmig.com
You have to dig a little for the information.

Help-site.com
http://www.help-site.com/c.m/w98/index
Windows 98 information is hard to come by even though the OS has been released for some time. This site has links to a ton of Win98 tips, tricks and tutorials.

NT WORKSTATION
Download this very long and thorough guide for NT Workstation.
