:: What's New @ MC MCSE ::

The Calm Before the Storm:
I still have nightmares from about 3 years ago when the CCNA retired, CompTIA's A+ exam was updated, and Microsoft released the Windows 2003 certification track. These events happened all at once, and it is about to happen again. This time Cisco's CCNP track is retiring, CompTIA is again updating their A+ exam, and Microsoft will be releasing the Windows Vista certification track. These situations are an absolute nightmare for a site like ours - it is too many materials for us to develop at once.

So, I am currently gathering my mental strength and preparing myself for the onslaught. As the time nears, it might be a good time for those of our members who have good writing skills and some free time to consider doing some writing for us. We will have paid authorship opportunities available in the near future, which can be a great way to pad your resume and help keep your skills current. We will mainly be looking to have practice tests written, but study guides will be needed as well. When we are ready to discuss this further, I will post an announcement in our forums.

Cheers,
Jason

:: Microsoft Sues Testking ::

Microsoft has filed a "John Doe" lawsuit against Testking.com for selling copyrighted Microsoft materials, namely the questions from certification exams. The filed complaint states:

"Microsoft is informed and believes, and on that basis alleges, that the Microsoft Certification Exam materials defendants sell through Testking.com contain exam questions and answers that are either identical or substantially similar to Microsoft's copyrighted exam questions and answers. Microsoft has not licensed or authorized defendants to copy or distribute its copyrighted exam content."

Microsoft is not only seeking an injunction against Testking, but damages as well as all of the profits acquired from the sale of these products. Microsoft also acknowledges that they are aware that Testking is just one of many sites owned by these people and they intend to have them all shut down.

:: Cisco Updates Re-certification Policy ::

Effective 8/18/2006, individuals who hold an active CCNP, CCDP, CCIP, CCSP, or CCVP will re-certify their professional level certifications when they pass any Cisco professional level certification exam. Certification holders will continue to re-certify their professional level certifications when they pass any CCIE written exam.

The expanded professional level re-certification policy recognizes certification holders who have taken steps to diversify their networking knowledge and skills to keep pace with todays evolving networking environment.

Professional level certifications must be re-certified every three years.

:: CCNA/CCNP Home Lab Article: The 2520 Router ::

I hear from CCNA and CCNP candidates every day, and the most common question is "What routers and switches should I buy for my home lab?" There is no one right answer to this question, since every test candidate has a different budget. There are also CCNA candidates who want to go on to the CCNP and want to know what routers and switches are best for future study. Again, there's no one right answer, but there are routers that fit every budget and every study plan - and the Cisco 2520 router is the king of home study labs.

The 2520 has four serial ports, one ethernet port, and a BRI port. You can use a 2520 as a frame relay switch, and still have ports to spare to practice routing protocols and directly connected serial interfaces. I know ISDN home simulators are still expensive if bought new, but you can get a used one on eBay and go from there. Even if you choose not to buy an ISDN simulator now, the 2520 gives you that opportunity for future home lab growth - and "planning for future growth" is important when it comes to your home lab as well as production networks!

2520s are also remarkably affordable. Check your favorite online auction site for prices. You may also want to search on the phrase "frame relay switch".

I know that getting started on your Cisco home lab can be a little scary, but it's a vital part of being totally prepared to pass the CCNA and CCNP exams. Hands-on work is imperative in learning any skill - after all, great chefs don't learn to cook on kitchen simulators! Visit online auction sites and used Cisco equipment resellers and see what's out there - and if you're wondering where to start, the 2520 is a great way to start building your own Cisco home lab!

:: Training Directory Product Reviews::

Here are the latest product reviews have been submitted to our Training Directory.

CBT Nuggets - By Anonymous
I tried these guys and found that their favorite pasttime, when not writing course material, is to write glowing reviews of themselves on certification websites. The reviews above are, frankly, ridiculous and so obviously written by the company itsself that they are painful to read. If their publicity mechanisms are so awful, what can the course material be like?

Reviewing the certification books and training products that you have used is a great way to help your peers. Be cool and submit some reviews in our Training Directory.
