| :: CompTIA RFID+ Boycott :: |
|
I am calling for an immediate boycott of CompTIA's RFID+ due to new knowledge that I have received about the dangers of RFID technology. You see, RFID has one purpose and that is tracking things.... or people.
40 international civil liberties groups have called for a moratorium on the use of RFID until acceptable privacy standards can be put in place. There are quite a few companies that have ignored this request including, CompTIA, Levi Strauss, Tesco (UK), and a few others.
There is a company in existence called VeriChip that is very eager to implant humans with RFID chips. They already proposed to the US government that we implant illegal immigrants so that we can track them. This is the most frightening Orwellian thing I have ever heard of and we need to reject it. If we embrace the misuse of this technology, we will eventually all be "chipped" and tracked.
Please note that this is not just a U.S. issue. Abuses of RFID are gaining steam all over the world. Also, this is not a personal attack on CompTIA, however, I feel that their certification supports the legitimacy of this technology. Until strict guidelines are in place for the use of RFID, I believe we should boycott all companies that encourage its use until such time as appropriate standards have been developed. The potential for abuse is just too high right now.

| :: CompTIA A+ Exam Update :: |
|
As we have been expecting, CompTIA announced their plans to update their A+ certification this year. In reality, this is more than just an update, but rather a major upgrade with new exams and procedures. Instead of having separate hardware and software exams, the new program will have an exam called A+ Essentials that will combine the 2 topics. The A+ Essentials exam will also increase coverage of topics such as security, safety, soft skills, and environmental issues.
A+ Essentials (220-601) overview and objectives.
For the 2nd exam, candidates will choose 1 of 3 (possibly 4) exams that best fits their job role. These will include IT Technician, Remote Support, or Depot Technician. More information on these exams can be found using the links below:
IT Technician (220-602) overview and objectives
Remote Support Technician (220-603) overview and objectives
Depot Technician (220-604) overview and objectives
The new exams will be released in late Q03 of this year. Read the full press release here.
On June 5, 2006, Cisco was honored at the 10th Colloquium for Information Systems Education (CISSE) by the United States Government National Security Agency (NSA) and the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) for its CCSP professional level security certification.
Cisco received a new designation for the 4013A National Training Standard. In addition, the CNSS recertified that Cisco's security training courseware meets the 4011 training standard for information security professionals in federal government. This recognition is another example of Cisco's commitment to security education and training.

| :: VCampus Buys Prosoft Learning Corporation :: |
|
On June 13th, VCampus announced that it had closed on the deal to purchase Prosoft Learning Corporation, producer of the CIW series of certifications for webmasters. The deal was reportedly worth 2.1 million dollars.
Prosoft Learning became part of Trinity Learning a few years ago after experiencing financial difficulties, however, that arrangement did not work out for unknown reasons and the 2 companies split.

CCNA Certification Library (CCNA Self-Study, exam #640-801), Sixth Edition

If you plan on taking the exams separately, then this book set would be great. However if you plan on taking the composite, then I would not recommend this book set. I found it very annoying to flip back and forth between two books for reference on the same subjects.
For example, VLANs are spread all over the place and VLAN trunking with a router is a small section in the middle of nowhere. Also the author fails to distinguish DTP vs. VTP. The two are very different for the exam. I felt the frame relay section with global addressing vs. local addressing was very unclear. I had to check with CISCOs whitepapers to make sure I understood proper configuration reference points. Some questions on the test were nowhere to be found in the books. Only found very few typos and errors, so the quality of the books were A+.
