Microsoft has announced that they have released a new framework for their certification programs. The certification titles that we have become accustomed to over the last decade are going away. Microsoft states that the changes are designed to better target specific job roles and will reduce the number of exams individuals need to take to prove competency in their areas of expertise. The new qualifications will be as follows:
Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS): This is the bottom rung, so to speak, of the new program. This program will allow individuals to demonstrate proficiency with specific Microsoft products. Microsoft has already released several Technology Specialist qualifications which are listed below:
- Technology Specialist: .NET Framework 2.0 Web Applications
- Technology Specialist: .NET Framework 2.0 Windows Applications
- Technology Specialist: .NET Framework 2.0 Distributed Applications
- Technology Specialist: SQL Server 2005
- Technology Specialist: BizTalk Server 2006
Judging from the requirements for the above qualifications, it appears that MCTS certifications will require 1 or 2 exams.
Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP): The MCITP designation is the "middle rung" of the new certification framework. Currently, Microsoft is offering the following MCITP certifications:
- IT Professional: Database Developer
- IT Professional: Database Administrator
- IT Professional: Business Intelligence Developer
Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD): The MCPD is the equivalent of the MCITP, however, it is geared towards programmers and web developers. Currently, the following designations exist:
- Professional Developer: Web Developer
- Professional Developer: Windows Developer
- Professional Developer: Enterprise Applications Developer
Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA): Microsoft's Architect program was announced earlier this year and is the highest level of certification offered. More information about this program can be found here.
Like Cisco certifications, these will require recertification every 3 years.
I would imagine that most of you are wondering about the status of the certifications that you hold or are currently working on. The following statement is from Microsoft's web site:
"No changes are planned for the MCSA and MCSE certification credentials for Windows Server 2003. When Microsoft releases the next version of the Windows client and server products, the new credentials will follow the new structure, with a Technology and Professional series. MCSEs, MCSAs, and MCDSTs will be offered an upgrade path to the new credentials."
Obviously, this is going to be a major change that will take some time to figure out and get used to. We will do our best to keep you posted on the latest news and expect major changes to our site (including domain name) over the next 6 months.
In the meantime, visit the New Generation page and make sure you read the FAQ.

| :: Introduction to Cisco's CCSP Certification :: |
|
You don't need me to tell you that security is the #1 concern in today's networks. With that in mind, your career path must include some security certifications, or you will be left behind.
Cisco's Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP) certification demands a candidate be well-rounded and well-versed in Cisco security measures. Besides the difficultly we've all come to expect from a Cisco exam, this five-exam path covers every major aspect of network security (from Cisco's viewpoint, anyway!)
You must hold a valid CCNA certification to earn your CCSP.
Typically, the first exam CCSP candidates take is Securing Networks With Cisco Routers An Switches (SNRS), followed by Securing Cisco Network Devices (SND). After you've nailed these two exams, which obviously focus on devices more familiar to CCNAs and CCNPs, you'll be faced with three exams that are more specific to Cisco security devices.
Your PIX knowledge will be tested with the Securing Networks With PIX and ASA (SNPA) exam, followed by the Implementing Cisco Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) exam.
In October 2005, the final exam is scheduled to change from a VPN exam (CSVPN, Cisco Secure Virtual Private Networks) to Securing Hosts Using Cisco Security Agent (HIPS). If you're just getting started on the CCSP track, you'll be taking the HIPS exam. (Insert your own joke here.)
The CCSP is valid for three years; to recertify, you'll need to pass the 642-541 CSI exam or any CCIE written exam. As always, this is subject to change, and you should bookmark Cisco's Learning page (found off the main Cisco webpage) to make sure you're aware of the latest changes to Cisco certification and recertification requirements.
Not only must you know how to secure your network, you also need to secure your current job and the possibilities for your future. By pursuing and obtaining the CCSP, you will do all three at once.

Network+ Study Guide, 4th Edition
Review by chartster
What can I say about this little gem? At over five hundred pages, the term 'little' is not to be taken literally but this book is supurb as it distills the facts out of the usual clutter and BS in other books and with some style I might add.
I exclusively used this nook when prepping for my N+ 2005 exam. Put it this way, I haven't even given other books a look in here, but for a one-stop study guide that will teach you a lot and help you pass the exam well, look no further than this.
Maybe not the cheapest of books, but you certainly get what you pay for here. Top quality study material from knowlegable authors that cover ALL of the objectives to the letter.
NB - The supplied flash card software and testing software is actually pretty good too. The supplied tests are pretty tough but will certainly make a N+ tech out of anybody!
Don't play roulette with other study guides out there. This is THE book to own for N+ study, so do yourself a favour and pick up a copy.
