MCPMag Releases 2004 Salary Survey

MCP Magazine has released the results of their ninth annual salary survey. The results show that salaries for MCPs have stabilized, but are currently flat. This is attributed to slower IT spending, job cuts, and outsourcing.

Vendor Neutral Certs Gaining Ground?

An article by CRN Magazine discusses a trend toward increased importance for vendor neutral certifications. JNCIA Book Review

JNCIA: Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate Study Guide
By Koen Pintens - MC MCSE

This book is another masterpiece in the Sybex line of study guides, written by 4 JNCIEs (a breed rarer than CCIEs) who have done a great job.

All topics of the JNCIA exam are covered in the 11 chapters of the book. Routing Protocols such as RIP, OSPF, BGP and IS-IS are fully explained theory wise and how to implement them on a Juniper M-series router. Also included are MPLS, Firewall filters (Juniper’s jargon for access-list for the Cisco people reading this) and M-series technical specifications are covered.

All of the chapters include real world scenarios as to why the routers use that type of configuration and not another way. Using multiple examples of the JUNOS CLI the study guide really prepares you for the JNCIA exam.

As standard by Sybex, each chapter concludes with the key words for the exam and a short test regarding the chapter. A more extensive test can be found on the CD that accompanies the study guide. Now that we touched the CD, I must mention that it also includes flash cards, a pdf of the book and pdf files regarding the JUNOS software. These last pdf’s are a must read when preparing for the JNCIA.

Returning to the contents of the book it starts off with an overview of the Juniper Networks available certification paths. After that introduction it starts on Juniper M-series specifics before touching routing policies. The following chapters cover the above mentioned routing protocols to conclude with a chapter on firewall filters and one on MPLS.

This study guide combined with Juniper Network’s website for technical resources will breeze you through the JNCIA exam. Just a piece of warning the JNCIA is not an easy exam, I rate it on the CCNP/CCDP level so even though it refers to the “associate” level it is far from easy, just the way a certification exam should be.
