Cisco CCNA Training Curriculum Enhancements

Cisco Systems, Inc. is pleased to announce enhancements to the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification training curriculum. As the entry-level certification of the Cisco Career Certifications program, CCNA represents a strong foundation and understanding of IP networking and troubleshooting. CCNA certified professionals can install, configure, and operate LAN, WAN, and dial access services for small networks (100 nodes or fewer), including but not limited to use of these protocols: IP, IGRP, Serial, Frame Relay, IP RIP, VLANs, RIP, Ethernet, Access Lists.

The enhancements are focused on the entry-level course, Introduction to Cisco Networking Technologies (INTRO) and include new hands-on lab exercises, built-in self assessments, and an updated course design. These enhancements reflect increased focus on technology skills and provide increased support to new candidates entering the networking field. The associated CCNA training curriculum and certification exams will not be replaced and the learning and exam objectives will remain the same.

CompTIA Renames Exam

In addition to redesigning their web site, CompTIA has announced that it has changed the name of their project management certification from IT Project+ to Project+. The decision was made because it is not just for I.T. project manangement, but rather for project management as a whole. CompTIA hopes this will draw a wider audience to the exam.

CCNA Book Review

Sybex CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, 4th Edition (640-801)
By David Schultz - MC MCSE

I picked up this book because it is time to recertify as a CCNA and the exam objectives have changed, so I needed a newer book. I really like the no nonsense writing style of Todd Lammle and this is the most straight-forward book I have seen yet. The information is very dense, but the book keeps moving and I did not find myself wasting time reading fluffy text. The amount of material really works in this book because of the clear explanations that are provided along with it. But the real kicker for me, and the reason why I really liked this book so much, is the labs and lists that Todd has added. Every command is explained, and the book shows what the output of each command would be. The output of each command is broken down and explained. In addition there is a list at the end of each chapter of every command that was covered.

There are also good questions at the end of each chapter to once again review what you have read. Finally, at the end of the book, there is a list of all commands covered in the book and a very in-depth glossary. I have always believed that the glossary is the heart of every certification book. I find this feature extremely helpful as a reference tool. After reading the book, I now find that there are some commands and information that I must review again. This book also comes with hands-on labs that tie in well with Sybex' Virtual Lab product.

As with all Sybex books, this one came with a CD, complete with very challenging review questions, the entire book on PDF, and flash cards that you can use on your computer. I really believe this finished off the book well to provide the reader with a complete and thorough, easily understood, self-directed study program for the newest CCNA test.
