MCSA/MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit: Implementing and Managing Security in a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure, Exam 70-214
I read this book as preparation for the exam 70-214. Although I read it in German, the review should also count for this English press.
The chapters cover following topics: group policies, user accounts and security groups, restrictions for accounts, users and groups, security based on accounts, certifications, public key infrastructure (PKI), improved authentication (lan manager, NTLM, NTLM 2 and trusts), IPSec, remote access and VPNs, security in WLANs, security for public application servers, security for web services, intrusion detection and event auditing, software maintenance.
This was the best book for reading of all Microsoft press products I read for MCSE. The tone of this book was not this self-sufficent as the books before, some critical notes could be found. This aspect and my personal interest made the reading a fun.
But for the exam the book is not even close to cover the needed aspects. In spite of the aspect that this is Microsofts book for the exam, the questions tend to focus other points. Especially the possibilities of GPOs in detail (single triggers) and the tools for testing and maintaining security (half a page in the book) are tested. If the exams 70-215, 70-216, 70-218 and 70-220 were not just passed but understood and the security tools (MBSA - Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer; HFNnetChk; SUS and Qchain) are well-known, you might feel ready for the test. It is an exam for people who work every day with such topics. To start with security, it appears to be too complex...
My personal opinion: This exam was a lot harder than 70-216. But I am more used to networking than security within Microsoft products

Mastering Windows 2000 Server (4th Edition)
The Sybex book, which is by Mark Minasi is an outstanding reference on Windows 2000 Server.
It is not, however, intended to be an exam study guide. It doesn't really discuss the exam, it doesn't give sample questions, it was not written with any regard to the test objectives (although he does cover a lot of ground). Minasi doesn't even think too highly of the whole certification process.
In the introduction, Minasi goes on to say that everything he knows is in the book & that he passed the tests "cold" without any additional studying and that "...if you know this book back to front, then you've probably got a chance at doing well on the four core tests and the Active Directory design test. (And no matter how you study, best of luck!) But, again, I want to stress that the goal of this book is to help you get your job done rather than to help you pass a test."
All the same I recommend the book highly to anyone who is going to be working with Server - Minasi's "tell it like it is" style is refreshing and informative.
I actually found one of the chapters (on RIS) reproduced in its entirety on the msdn website even though some of the passages weren't very flattering to Microsoft. I'd call that an endorsement.
