SURVEY RESULTS:
Our most recent survey asked the following question: Do you currently work in the IT industry?

The results were as follows:

67% answered Yes
33% answered No
There were 1006 respondents.

As you can see from these results, there is still a huge influx of people entering(or trying to enter) the IT industry from other professions. Many speculate that this has caused lower wages and more competitive job markets in the IT field. I would speculate that these people are needed to fill the entry-level help desk and techsupport positions. As those that have acquired experience are moving up the ladder, there will be positions opening up at the bottom that need to be filled. These positions provide a great starting point for those coming from other industries that are looking to get a start in the IT industry.

WIN2000 TRACK CHOICES TO BE MADE:
Most of you have heard about the retirement of the NT 4.0 certification track. Since this announcement, we have been flooded with email from people wondering how to plan their certification in light of this news. There has also been a lot of incorrect information floating around that is leaving many people confused, so lets take a look at what we know so far regarding the retirements.

- The Windows 2000 exams will be available sometime during the 2nd quarter of 2000, according to Microsoft. The new track will require that you pass 4 core exams, 1 additional core exam(choice) and 2 electives for a total of 7 exams.
- The following exams will be retired on December 31, 2000: 70-058, 70-067, 70-068 and 70-073. These are the 4 core exams for the NT 4.0 track.
- For those who have already passed these exams before Dec. 31st 2000, their certification will remain valid until June 30th 2001. This means that you will have 6 months to update to the Win2000 track from the time of retirement.
- For those that have passed 70-067, 70-068 and 70-073 prior to their retirement will be offered a choice. You can either take exam 70-240 which is an accelerated upgrade or start the Win2000 track from scratch. It appears to make more sense to take the upgrade path.
- All candidates(upgraders also) will be required to pick an additional core exam to take.
- Electives will carry over as long as they are not scheduled to be retired. For more information on electives, go to: http://www.microsoft.com/mcp

So what does this all mean to you? Lets try to spell it out.

1) If you are already an MCSE on the NT4.0 track, you will need to take the accelerated upgrade exam(70-240) and choose 1 of 3 additional core exams. You will also need to replace any of your electives that will be retired, if any.

2) If you are an MCP on the NT4.0 track that has passed 70-067, 70-068 and 70-073, you will need to take the accelerated upgrade exam(70-240) and choose 1 of 3 additional core exams. You will also need to replace any of your electives that will be retired, if any.

3) If you are an MCP and have not passed all 3 of the above exams, then I would suggest that you do so in order to be eligible for the upgrade exam.

4) If you have not yet begun your certification, you have a tough choice ahead of you. You can start on the NT 4.0 track and get the 3 core exams and then qualify for the upgrade. You will then still have to complete any electives that you have not completed yet. Or, you can just wait until the 2000 track begins and start there. Or, you can take a couple of electives that you know will still be valid on the new track and take the 5 core exams on the new track. There are many different ways that you can do it, unfortunately, it is a decision that you will have to make for yourself.

If you have any questions about the retirements or new track, please check out Microsofts website at http://www.microsoft.com/mcp/certstep/mcse.htm. Right now, we only know what is posted there.
